In response to the massive devastation that has hit both the animal and human populations of Louisiana and Mississippi, I will be traveling to Louisiana at the end of this month to volunteer. I will be working as a veterinary technician with the Louisiana Humane society. The people I will be working with have tried to give me a description of what I can expect to face upon arrival. They do, however, agree that nothing is going to be able to prepare me for what I will see when I get there. I have heard reports of bodies hanging from trees, animals wandering the streets with fungus growing on their matted fur, animals with broken limbs and severe lacerations, and dogs howling in buildings that still cannot be reached by rescuers. All of this we see on the news and read in the papers. Yet there is definately a difference when you hear it from a person, speaking to you from the city with tears in their voice.|
Of course I am doing volunteer work; there is no money to buy food much less pay me. Therefore, I am asking everyone I know to help me make this journey. My expenses in Baltimore are humble but still relevant and a cause for concern. This is an enormous favor to ask, but please, if you were considering making a donation to the Red Cross or an animal rescue effort please do. However, know that they are paying a certain amount of staffing and overhead. Another option in your donating frenzy is to sponsor me directly. With the bills covered at home I can stay in Louisiana longer. As it is now I will be there for one month. There are only five other people in the group I will be working with. Believe me, they need me. Please visit my livejournal @ www.livejournal.com/users/grey_cat or my myspace page at www.myspace.com/cydnycicada to make a paypal donation to keep me going. No amount is too small. As long as funds hold out, so will I. Also, no extra money will kept by me. Every penny over my basic expenses will be donated to the Louisiana Humane society. I will post pictures and updates from the field as often as I can. Also, I will have my cell phone with me at all times for direct contact. My email address has changed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Just when you thought I wouldn’t hit you up again, please check out the attached list of items I am collecting to bring with me to Louisiana. Thank you everyone for your support.

If you can take supplies down with you, let me know, and I'll pick up some food and treats and things from petco for you to take. If you can't take them, let me know where I can take them so they get delivered to the furries in need.
Good luck, and blessed be for doing this. You are truly amazing :)

yes yes yes, I posted the list because I CAN BRING THEM WITH ME. thanks.
Ok, the donation link is set up and this post has been updated so it's there now. I also posted it on your myspace blog and put up a bulletin so people will find it.
Aww, Cyd, my heart really goes out to you, and I really hope that you get what you need, but there is no way I can help right now. My expenses are so tight that I'm a whole month behind on my mortgage and I have plenty of animals in my house to take care of.
I just wanted to send good thoughts your way. *hug*

Regarding what is needed:
Just a note, the group I've been working with for donations for relief have told us that they no longer want dry food (cat or dog) and that at this point it's being thrown out because it goes bad before they can use it. As a result they'd just like canned food down there. Just thought people might note that, I'm not sure what they've told you with the group that you're going with but that is my understanding. None the less, good luck down there.

Re: Regarding what is needed:
Yeah, the group I am going down to meet is the Alexandria Humane Society of Louisiana and they do need dry food badly. Thanks for the input.
