At work in Mississippi [Sep. 29th, 2005|12:28 am]
[mood |busybusy]

[This update is being posted by Tim, not Cydny - since she does not have internet access at the shelter]

Cydny arrived at the Louisiana Humane Society's field shelter in southern Mississippi this afternoon after two long days of driving (she stayed in Knoxville last night). She's been hard at work all evening taking care of numerous dogs and getting oriented with the work at hand. In the morning, she'll be heading out early with a team of volunteers into the non-flooded areas of New Orleans to rescue stranded animals. She reports that it is hot, humid, and buggy - but a safe environment. The biggest threat so far are the people who hide in bushes near the dog cages, and then attempt to steal pitbulls and other valuable dogs at night. Apparently people are that lame? Dog looters? If they want one so bad, they should get their lazy ass into the city and rescue an animal themselves.

Anyhow, I am happy to report that Cydny has successfully arrived and is jumping right into a busy and stressful work schedule. I'll update for her again tomorrow if she doesn't find internet access, and I'll pass on any well-wishes that you leave for her!

Animal Rescue [Sep. 14th, 2005|09:25 am]
In response to the massive devastation that has hit both the animal and human populations of Louisiana and Mississippi, I will be traveling to Louisiana at the end of this month to volunteer. I will be working as a veterinary technician with the Louisiana Humane society. The people I will be working with have tried to give me a description of what I can expect to face upon arrival. They do, however, agree that nothing is going to be able to prepare me for what I will see when I get there. I have heard reports of bodies hanging from trees, animals wandering the streets with fungus growing on their matted fur, animals with broken limbs and severe lacerations, and dogs howling in buildings that still cannot be reached by rescuers. All of this we see on the news and read in the papers. Yet there is definately a difference when you hear it from a person, speaking to you from the city with tears in their voice.

Of course I am doing volunteer work; there is no money to buy food much less pay me. Therefore, I am asking everyone I know to help me make this journey. My expenses in Baltimore are humble but still relevant and a cause for concern. This is an enormous favor to ask, but please, if you were considering making a donation to the Red Cross or an animal rescue effort please do. However, know that they are paying a certain amount of staffing and overhead. Another option in your donating frenzy is to sponsor me directly. With the bills covered at home I can stay in Louisiana longer. As it is now I will be there for one month. There are only five other people in the group I will be working with. Believe me, they need me. Please visit my livejournal @ www.livejournal.com/users/grey_cat or my myspace page at www.myspace.com/cydnycicada to make a paypal donation to keep me going. No amount is too small. As long as funds hold out, so will I. Also, no extra money will kept by me. Every penny over my basic expenses will be donated to the Louisiana Humane society. I will post pictures and updates from the field as often as I can. Also, I will have my cell phone with me at all times for direct contact. My email address has changed to cydny@subspecies.org.

Just when you thought I wouldn’t hit you up again, please check out the attached list of items I am collecting to bring with me to Louisiana. Thank you everyone for your support.

I miss Tim [Mar. 8th, 2004|02:13 pm]
Tim is good to be quiet and rlaxed with and not focus too much on the distractions around you with. Tim should be here at work with me, he would amuse me and make the day more tolerable.

You're The Sound and the Fury!

by William Faulkner

Strong-willed but deeply confused, you are trying to come to grips
with a major crisis in your life. You can see many different perspectives on the issue,
but you're mostly overwhelmed with despair at what you've lost. People often have a hard
time understanding you, but they have some vague sense that you must be brilliant
anyway. Ultimately, you signify nothing.

so I am moving Sunday and I am actually looking forward to it. This means there is probably a house warming at my place on Friday or Saturday night of next week. I have very little furniture, Matt and I managed not to acumulate much in two years but it should be okay.

I need to find $189 for this couch I want at Ikea. It's cool and it folds into a full ize ben but it's not quite a futon. Maybe everyone will give me a small incriment of money as a house warming present and I could run gleefully to my couch. :)*smiling sweetly*.

In the meantime the fucking school closed my fucking classes again today and I want to go to my moms tonite, so I am just going to cut tomorrow if they don't close them again. I will never get back to college at this rate. Damn you winter.
